CAIXA GERAL DE DEPOSITOS

Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), established in 1876, is a universal bank head of Portugal's largest financial group. It has a considerable share of the domestic market, with 31,4% of deposits, 22,2% of credit. CGD’s consolidated assets are valued at over EUR 74 billion with equity higher than EUR 5 billion.

As part of a universal financial group, CGD is active in all areas of the financial sector, including retail and commercial banking, investment banking, insurance, asset management, brokerage, leasing and factoring, venture capital and real estate management.

Of all Portuguese financial groups, CGD has the largest international platform. Including affiliated banks, branches, representative offices and strategic equity holdings, CGD is present in over 21 countries and territories spread out over 4 continents. Approximately 12,7% of CGD’s consolidated assets (Dec, 2003) are derived from the international business platforms.

CGD commands a notable standing among its international peers, holding the 129th place among all world banks by tier 1 capital (The Banker, July 2003 issue) and the 108th place by Total Assets.

CGD hosts the Euro Info Centre (EIC PT509) Lisbon, a specialised office integrating a transnational network tailored by the European Commission to help SME making the most of the opportunities offered by Europe. CGD’s EIC itself comprises offices in Lisbon, Porto and Leiria, providing nationwide coverage and geographical proximity towards Portuguese SME. Two additional relays at Paredes (North of Portugal) and Macao contribute for the EIC close relationship with businesses.
